Words are powerful tools that help to shape and inform our experiences of the world around us. The language we use with students about learning, thinking and experiences influences the way learners think about and approach a learning experience.

The child begins to perceive the world not only through sight but also through language. And later it is not just seeing but acting that becomes informed by words.

Through the use of language, educators name, notice and highlight the types of thinking and ideas that are important within the context of the learning experience.

When we begin to name and notice the thinking of learners and positive learning moves, students begin to exhibit more of these behaviours. Ron Ritchhart states "What we name and notice, we get more of."

Understanding how to leverage and utilise language is important part of developing a culture of thinking in classrooms, schools, organisations etc. It is important to examine the use of our language in order to see if we are conveying the desired sentiments and intentions. Sometimes making simple adjustments to our language is easy to make, such as noticing and naming thinking. Other times it is a little more challenging, such as when we are learning to use the language of listening and trying to get through the lesson and cover content.
