Documenting Thinking
In this routine, students are generally sharing their thinking at each step along the way before moving on to the next one. This allows the class to build on the group's thinking and often results in richer discussions. If you are wanting to document thinking as your students engage with the routine Main Side Hidden then this template may be useful. ![]()

I have used this routine with students to examine the different stories that run through a text, especially longer and more complex novels. It is also a really useful routine for helping learners unpack what is occurring in animations as well as shorter texts such as short stories, fairytales or fables.
The animation 'Last Shot' is an example of a multimedia text I used recently with colleagues at an education conference to help them understand how to use this routine to scaffold student thinking. |
