Educators are quite au fait with the notion of modeling, with many experiences of instructional modeling delivered to learners on a daily basis - "Watch me and I'll show you."
In order to build a culture of thinking within an educational context learners need to model who they are as thinkers and learners. This is by no means limited to students but must also include the teacher or instructional leader. It is vital that this modeling be authentic and real so that learners can gain a valuable insight into the thought processes behind someone's thoughts and actions. Ron Ritchhart highlights that this can be an area many educators might struggle with, especially when trying to model risk-taking, reflection and accepting and learning from one's mistakes. |
