Documenting Thinking

In this routine, students are generally sharing their thinking at each step along the way before moving on to the next one. This allows the class to build on the group's thinking and often results in richer discussions.

​I have used this routine in a slightly different way by using the prompts Sentence - Picture - Word when exploring texts that also have illustrations to support meaning.

• Which picture helped support your understanding of the text? Why?

• What mental picture have you created in your mind as you have read the text? What ​clues did the author give to help you create this picture?
• Which word captured your attention? Why?
