going in order to make a self-assessment about where their learning needs to head next and how they might achieve that. Engaging in these student learning conferences forms one part of our Assessment As Learning process. How was it implemented? We gathered as a class to talk about the reasons why reflection on our learning progress and effort over the term was important. Each child was given their own individual copy of the learning conferences template to use as they:
I assigned five-minutes to meet with each student about their reflection over the course of the week and how they thought they were going. The conversation that took place was extremely powerful and gave me a greater insight into exactly how each student perceived they were going with their learning. I recorded key discussion points that were raised during our discussions in a different colour on the student's learning conference sheet. The highly valuable information I gathered from these conferences will be drawn upon when I meet with parents for parent teacher interviews in Week 2 of Term 2. This will be the springboard I use to engage parents in discussion about their child's learning and behaviour in the classroom before outlining specifics I want to address. These further discussion points (from a parents perspective) will also be added to the learning conference sheet in a third colour so that I can draw about this information when I begin to craft student academic reports.
If you use the template or engage in student learning conferences with your students, tell us about it in the comments below. We'd love to hear about it!
