Our sole purpose as teachers is to educate, guide, facilitate, inspire and question the young minds of our students as we endeavour to prepare them for a world we have not yet experienced or imagined. It is a complex process that is forever evolving – no day, month or year is exactly the same. It is with this understanding (and acceptance of it), that we need to look for ways to change what we are doing in the classroom and the way we go about doing it. Not for changes sake but to ensure that we are improving the educational outcomes for the students we are teaching, improving our practice and helping to change the culture of the school. George Couros writes in his book The Innovator’s Mindset this inspiring quote; In the live You Tube blog George and Katie Martin talked about what this looks like in education and there are some things that definitely stood out for me: Change doesn’t mean we scrap everything we are doing and grab a hold of everything that is new. When things change you have to do something different. Change provides us with the opportunity to step outside of our comfort zones and move into the realms of what we thought was impossible before. We are forever trying to push our kids to work in their zone of proximal development but how often are we pushed or do we push ourselves to do the same.
