One of the comments that stuck with me from this mornings #IMMOOC Session 2 was the notion that leader’s go first! As a teacher I am always looking for, creating and reading about different ways other colleagues have approached different learning outcomes (with and without the use of digital technologies) to enhance learning and engagement. Many of the things I have tried and implemented in my classroom; other colleagues have asked me to model using in their classrooms with their students.
This means leaders need to be in touch with how classrooms are working in their schools, diocese etc. in order to best understand the needs and strengths of our teachers and students. It also means leaders need to be modelling innovative ideas and taking the risks and be held accountable for their role in effecting change.
In my school this term (Term 3), I have seen so many of my colleagues feel supported enough to take risks and try new things, even to the extent that many of them have buddied up to support others in integrating technology into their classrooms. It could be as simple as:
Being a technology leader (or any leader in fact) does not mean I need to be the one with the most knowledge and keep it all to myself. Technology integration is most effective when there is a growing shared knowledge amongst colleagues and support to utilise this knowledge. Sometimes what we try works really well (it meets outcomes and is highly engaging for students) and sometimes it doesn’t work out the way we planned. The most important thing is that we learn from the experiences, openly reflect upon them and continuously ask ourselves “How can I best meet the needs of these learners?”
