Over the holiday break, I have spent time reflecting on my teaching practice and the experiences that I afforded to students during Term 3. As I have mentioned in an number of other posts, my Year 6 students engaged in Genius Hour and blogging for the first time in Term 3. As my grade partners and I gathered during the holidays for planning, we spent some time discussing the process of Genius Hour, Blogging and what we want students to be able to either work towards or achieve during the course of Term 4. Our conversation centered around the following learning goals:
It took some back and forth debate to get our learning goals to this point. I don’t envisage that this learning journey will be an easy one. It has been a challenging journey so far to try and un-ingrain the passive spoon-feeding students expected to get when they walked through my classroom door at the beginning of the academic year. I’m not saying that the way my colleagues have taught or are teaching is in any way wrong, I just expected something different from my students. I expect them to be:
